Playground Initiative

 Broadway students helped imagine what this space could become – a place where every kid can move, play, explore, and feel like they belong.

Outdoor spaces shape how children move, connect, and grow. From daily laps on the Broadway Mile to playground adventures with friends, time outside and learning about wellbeing is central to student life at Broadway.

Our campus is also located along Broadway (Highway 340) in the Redlands, making these spaces a convenient gathering place for many in the broader community.

But the playground, pea gravel surfacing, and field were built decades ago and are ready for a thoughtful transformation.

Communities with vibrant, healthy schools are places where people want to live, work, and invest. As schools across the country face increasing budget pressures and closures, strong community partnership has never been more important.

Play It Forward is our opportunity to reimagine Broadway’s outdoor spaces as welcoming places that support movement, play and connection for everyone. By intentionally designing spaces where children of all abilities – and families across our community – can move, explore, and gather together, we strengthen both student wellbeing and community life.

Bringing this vision to life will take a combination of grants, financial support, and in-kind contributions from local partners, businesses, and families who believe in the power of shared community spaces.

Together we are creating an outdoor environment designed around three core experiences:

MOVEMENT

• The Broadway Mile loop for daily movement. Join the Broadway Mile Club!
• Open green space for play and community use

PLAY

• An inclusive playground designed for children of all abilities
• Climbing and balance elements that encourage curiosity and challenge
• Areas for imaginative and social play
• Shade structures to support sun safety

CONNECTION

• Gathering spaces where students and families can meet and relax
• Natural elements that invite exploration
• Welcoming spaces for community use
• Accessible pathways that connect all the elements of our open space
